OrBorJor tourney has prize for every
game
Anchalee Vanich-Thepabutr, president
of the Provincial Administration Organization (OrBorJor) on June
23 posed for a photo with football players on the Phuket Wittayalai
School team (blue strip) and the Muang Thalang School team (in
orange).
The two teams met during a match in the OrBorJor U League Cup
2007, a tournament that will extend until September 21, with games
played at Surakul Stadium. There are eight teams in the tournament
and a total of 56 games will be played to determine the winner
and recipient of the 10,000 baht final trophy.
Teams paid a 20,000 baht entry to the tournament and they will
receive 1,000 baht for each win along the way. Muang Thalang School
bested Phuket Wittayalai School 2-0 in their match.

A kicking for Dog’s Bollocks
PPATONG: Playing at home
in Round 10 of the Patong Darts League, an inspired Queen
Mary side-swiped all three points from first-place Dog’s Bollocks
when former Scottish international Billy closed out the beer
leg with a cool 97 finish (T19, X20).
In another upset, Beach House snatched two points by beating
Shakers on the road, 5-4. Shakers, who salvaged a point by
winning the beer leg, now sit in a tie for third place with
Queen Mary.
In the only other match played, Offshore found the board at
Simply Red very much to their liking, whitewashing the newcomers
9-0 and remaining sober enough to take the beer leg as well.

Golf for youngsters
CHERNG TALAY: Kids-Tee-Off
(KTO) will be hosting the KTO Junior Challenge golf tournament
for players between 6 and 17 years old at Laguna Phuket Golf
Club on September 5-7.
The 54-hole international tournament, sponsored by the children’s
golf clothing manufacturer KTO, will have five age divisions
and is open to both boys and girls. The course will be shortened
providing age- and gender-appropriate tees to maintain the
pace of play.
Tim Haddon, Director of Golf at Laguna Phuket Golf Club, said
that the sponsorship of a children’s sporting event is important
to develop young players’ skill.
“To have the chance to play competitive golf at the very early
stages as a junior can not only give a young golfer a taste
of competition but can be the very thing that shapes champions.
The KTO Junior Challenge 2007 is a very clear step toward
finding the next generation of talented young Asian golfers.”
The tournament registration is US$285 (about 9,362 baht) per
player, and includes caddy and greens fees, awards luncheon
and extras. Players must hold a handicap card from a recognized
golf club.

Hospitals play for charity
PHUKET CITY: Players from
Bangkok Hospital Phuket (BPK), Vachira Phuket Hospital, Patong
Hospital and Phuket International Hospital (PIH) fought it
out in a day of futsal and basketball at Saphan Hin on June
16 to increase cooperation between the institutions and to
raise money for charity.
Vachira beat Patong 6-2 to win the final of the futsal competition,
while BPK beat PIH 9-2 to win the third-place playoff.
PIH bounced back in the basketball competition, beating Vachira
68-61 to win the tourney. BPK placed third, beating Patong
26-18.
The hospitals held the event to strengthen their relationships,
promote health and harmony and to raise money for a donation
of sports equipment to Yaowawit School for underprivileged
children in Phang Nga. The equipment will be delivered June
30.
American wins Laguna Marathon in record time

CHERNG TALAY: Amid sporadic
downpours and Phuket’s wet season drizzle, American Brent
Christian Roeger won the second Laguna Phuket International
Marathon June 17 with a time of 2 hours 45 minutes 44 seconds,
setting a new course record.
Phuket resident and Hash House Harrier “Fast” Eddy Ou, originally
from the US, was second across the finish line (3:11:10),
followed by Seppo Rosnell from Finland (3:15:37).

Nicola Green from the UK was the first woman to complete
the marathon, completing the circuit in 3:16:46, followed
by Lai Chee Yong from Singapore (3:50:46) and Diana Finkel
from the US (3:51:03).
Thai Niwat Oytip won the 21km half marathon with a time
of 1:21:14. Anthony Seakins from the UK finished second
(1:22:25), followed by Dominic Yu Ho Chung from China (1:22:36).
The top three female finishers in the half marathon were
Vivian Tang from Singapore (1:29:05), Gillian Caskka from
the UK (1:33:29) and Pauline Mulroy (1:36:51).

More than 3,000 athletes from 40 countries took part in
the events, which also included a 10km fun run, a 5km walk
and a 1km kids’ run.
The races started early morning with the marathon runners
leaving the start line at Laguna Phuket at 5 am. The half
marathon started at 6 am, followed by the 10-km fun run
at 6:30 am and the walk at 6:55 am. The kids’ run started
at 9 am.
The walk, introduced to the event this year, saw a large
turnout of teams from local businesses and organizations,
many of which wore team colors and had pledged to raise
money for charity. There were also many individual entries,
bringing the total number of participants in the walk to
500.
Sports celebrities Charlie Webster and Andy Penders, football
presenters for ESPN STAR Sports, and Japanese “eco-marathoner”
Hajime Nishi also joined the event.
Charlie, a former professional 800m runner, competed in
the half marathon then led youngsters on the 1km run. After
crossing the finish line with the race winner, Charlie stayed
by the finish line to cheer on youngsters over the final
few meters.
Andy Penders and Hajime Nishi took a more leisurely approach
to the races with Andy joining the walk and Hajime staying
true to his eco-marathon philosophy by taking time to enjoy
the beautiful scenery and chatting with crowds along the
course.
